What is IgE?

Immunoglobulin E, or IgE, is a type of antibody made by the immune system. Its main role is to recognise foreign proteins such as pollen, dust mites, mould, pet dander, certain foods, or parasite particles. When IgE overreacts to harmless everyday substances, it triggers the release of histamine and other chemicals — this is what produces allergy symptoms.

A blood IgE test measures either the total amount of IgE circulating in the blood, or the IgE directed against one specific trigger (specific IgE). It helps doctors decide whether an allergic or immune response is likely behind a patient's complaints.

When is an IgE test usually advised?

  • Repeated sneezing, runny or blocked nose, especially in the morning or during a season
  • Itchy, watery or red eyes that keep returning
  • Recurrent dry cough, wheezing, chest tightness or breathlessness
  • Itchy skin rashes, hives (urticaria), or eczema-like patches
  • Frequent throat clearing or a feeling of mucus in the throat
  • Suspected food reactions such as itching, swelling, nausea or breathing difficulty after eating
  • Evaluation of asthma control or before starting certain long-term allergy treatments

Total IgE vs Specific IgE

Total IgE gives a broad number. A high total IgE suggests the body is in an allergic or reactive state, but it does not name the trigger. A specific IgE test looks for the response to one suspected allergen — for example dust mite, cat dander, peanut, or mango pollen. Both have different uses, and a doctor chooses based on the patient's history rather than testing randomly.

A normal total IgE does not completely rule out allergy, and a raised total IgE does not always mean allergy. Interpretation needs the clinical picture, which is why self-diagnosis from a single number is not reliable.

What can raise IgE levels?

  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) due to pollen, dust or mould
  • Allergic asthma or poorly controlled wheezing
  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema) or chronic urticaria
  • Parasitic (worm) infections, still relevant in some tropical settings
  • Certain immune conditions and, rarely, some blood disorders
  • Exposure to smoke, strong fumes, or occupational allergens

How the test is done and how to prepare

  • A small blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm.
  • Fasting is usually not required for IgE testing.
  • Tell the doctor about any antihistamines, steroids or asthma medicines you are taking, as they may influence symptoms and interpretation even though blood IgE itself is less affected than skin-prick testing.
  • Avoid heavy exercise or unusual stress right before the sample collection.
  • Reports are generally available the same day or by the next working day.
